In Noisemakers, I was inspired by the cicada's cyclical emergence from underground. Every seventeen years or so, these creatures emerge to form these black moving, noisy clouds. The idea of counting the years, in preparation for a potentially wildly uncontrollable, potentially catastrophic event to happen seemed very apocalyptic to me.
